Getting Married in Finland as an English-Speaking Couple? Here's What You Need to Know

Finland is one of the most beautiful places in the world to get married. Long summer evenings with light that never quite disappears, forests, lakes, island venues, and a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere that lends itself perfectly to natural, documentary-style wedding photography. If you are planning a wedding here as an international couple - or as a Finnish partner with an English-speaking spouse - this guide is for you.
The Challenge Nobody Talks About
Planning a wedding in a foreign country is already a lot. Add a language barrier into the mix and it becomes genuinely stressful. Finding vendors, reading contracts, communicating your vision, asking questions on the day - all of it becomes harder when you are not confident in the local language.
I hear this from couples regularly. They have found a venue they love, booked a caterer, sorted the flowers - and then when it comes to the photographer, they want someone they can actually talk to. Someone who understands what they are asking for, who can put them at ease with a joke during portraits, and who will not leave them wondering what just happened when the ceremony ends.
That is exactly the gap I fill.
Who I Am
My name is Pat Sharpe. I am a British photographer based in Espoo, Finland, and I have been photographing weddings and events for many years - first across the UK, and now here in Finland since moving with my wife in 2022.
I work in English as my first language, and I have enough Finnish to get by when needed. For international couples, expats, or anyone who simply feels more comfortable communicating in English, that makes the entire experience smoother and more enjoyable.
My style is relaxed and documentary. I work quietly in the background for most of the day, capturing genuine moments as they happen - the look between the two of you before you walk in, the laughter during speeches, the quiet moment nobody else noticed. I guide you through group photos and portraits when needed, but I am not about stiff poses or forced smiles.
Why Finland is Such a Beautiful Place to Get Married
If you have not yet chosen your venue, here are a few things that make Finland genuinely special for weddings:
The light. In summer, Finland enjoys incredibly long days with soft, golden evening light that lasts for hours. For a photographer, it is a dream. Portraits taken at 9pm in July look like something out of a fairy tale.
The nature. Whether you are getting married on the Helsinki archipelago, beside a lake in the Finnish countryside, or in a forest venue outside Espoo, the natural surroundings do a lot of the work. Finland's landscapes are breathtaking and photograph beautifully in every season.
The intimacy. Finnish weddings tend to be personal and relaxed. The culture is not about big showy displays - it is about meaningful time with the people who matter most. That suits my documentary style perfectly.
The venues. From manor houses and island retreats to urban Helsinki locations and lakeside cabins, the variety of wedding venues in Finland is genuinely impressive. I have photographed at Villa Hannus in Espoo, on sailboats in Helsinki harbour, at Nikkilä church in Sipoo, and at countless other locations across the capital region and beyond.
What to Look for in a Wedding Photographer in Finland
If you are searching for a photographer and English communication is important to you, here are a few things worth checking:
Ask directly. Not every photographer who lists English as a language is equally comfortable working in it throughout a full wedding day. Ask them to have a brief call with you before booking - it gives you a much better sense of how communication will actually feel.
Look at their style. Do the images on their website reflect the kind of photos you want? Relaxed and candid, or more formal and posed? There is no right or wrong, but there should be alignment between what you see and what you want.
Check their reviews. Google reviews from past clients are one of the most honest signals of what working with someone is actually like.
Make sure they understand the brief. A good photographer should be asking you questions — about your day, your venue, the moments you care about most. If they just send a price and nothing else, that tells you something.
Covering the Whole of Finland
I am based in Espoo, which puts me right in the heart of the Helsinki metropolitan area. I cover weddings throughout the capital region - Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, Sipoo, Kirkkonummi, Lohja, and surrounding areas - with no travel fee. For weddings further afield across Finland, I am happy to travel and simply add a transparent travel cost to the package.
