If you are planning a wedding in the Helsinki region, Espoo might just be the best kept secret in Finnish wedding planning. Sitting right next door to the capital, it offers everything Helsinki does - beautiful venues, excellent transport links, and stunning scenery - but with a quieter, more relaxed feel that suits weddings perfectly.

As a wedding photographer based in Espoo, I have had the privilege of photographing couples across the city and surrounding areas. I know the venues, I know the light at different times of year, and I know exactly what makes Espoo such a special place to get married. Here is everything you need to know.

Why Espoo is Such a Beautiful Place to Get Married

Espoo is not what most people picture when they think of a Finnish city. It is one of the most nature-rich urban areas in Europe, with forests, lakes, a stunning coastline, and the breath-taking Nuuksio National Park sitting right on its doorstep. The city seamlessly blends natural beauty with elegant, well-designed spaces - which makes it an exceptional setting for weddings of all kinds.

For photography, it is a dream. Whether you are exchanging vows in an 18th century manor, celebrating beside the sea, or sneaking away into the forest for couple portraits, the backdrops are genuinely stunning in every season.

The Best Time of Year to Get Married in Espoo

Finland's seasons are dramatic and distinct, and each one brings something different to a wedding day. There is no universally right answer - the best time depends entirely on the kind of day you want.

Summer (June, July, August)

This is the most popular season, and for good reason. Finnish summer evenings are extraordinary - the sun barely sets, and the soft golden light that lingers until 10 or 11 pm creates a magical atmosphere that is almost impossible to replicate anywhere else in the world. For outdoor portraits and ceremony photography, late summer evenings in Espoo are simply stunning.

June and July tend to be the busiest months for both venues and photographers, so if you have your heart set on a specific date, book early. August is slightly quieter and can offer even more beautiful light as the golden hour starts to arrive a little earlier in the evening.

The one thing to be aware of with Finnish summer weddings is the unpredictability of the weather. Rain is always possible, so having a plan for both outdoor and indoor photography is wise.

Autumn (September, October)

This is my personal favourite season for wedding photography, and it is genuinely underrated. September and October in Espoo bring extraordinary autumn colours - the forests around Nuuksio, the parks in Tapiola, and the grounds of Espoonkartano all turn shades of amber, red, and gold that make for breathtaking wedding photographs.

The light in autumn is also softer and warmer than summer, which suits documentary and portrait photography beautifully. Venues are also easier to book and often more competitively priced than in peak summer months. If you want something a little different from the typical summer wedding, an autumn celebration in Espoo is hard to beat.

Winter (November to March)

Winter weddings in Espoo are having a moment, and it is easy to see why. A fresh blanket of snow transforms the city's parks, forests, and manor house grounds into something out of a fairy tale. Venues like Espoonkartano and Villa Frosterus take on a completely different character in winter - intimate, candlelit, and incredibly atmospheric.

The light in winter is challenging but beautiful when used well - low angles, long shadows, and the reflective quality of snow create a completely different kind of photography. For couples who want something genuinely unique and visually striking, a winter wedding in Espoo is worth serious consideration.

One practical note - if you are hoping for outdoor portraits, wrap up warm and keep the outdoor session short and sweet. The photos will absolutely be worth it.

Spring (April, May)

Spring is often overlooked, but it offers some of the most beautiful conditions of the year. The snow melts, the light returns, and Finland starts to come alive again. May in particular is a wonderful time for outdoor ceremonies and portraits - the nature is fresh and green, the days are long, and the weather is often mild enough for comfortable outdoor photography without the unpredictability of full summer.

Spring is also a quieter season for weddings, which means better availability of venues and suppliers and often better pricing.

The Best Wedding Venues in Espoo

Espoo has a remarkable variety of wedding venues for a city of its size. Here are some of the most popular and photogenic options:

Espoonkartano (Espoo Manor)

Founded in 1556 and with its current main building dating to 1797, Espoonkartano is widely considered the finest wedding venue in Espoo. The historic manor house sits in beautiful grounds with sweeping green fields, mature trees, and a setting that photographs beautifully in every season. The estate has over 15 years of experience hosting weddings and the surrounding grounds offer some of the most inspiring outdoor portrait locations in Finland. For couples wanting a classic, elegant Finnish wedding with genuine history, this is the venue.

Villa Frosterus, Soukanniemi

For a coastal Espoo wedding with an archipelago feel, Villa Frosterus is a wonderful option. Located in Soukanniemi, the villa offers sea views in multiple directions and a setting that feels like a private island escape. It works best for smaller, more intimate weddings - ideal for couples who want a relaxed, personal celebration rather than a large formal event.

Koiviston Huvila, Nuuksio

Set on the shores of Sahajärvi lake in the Nuuksio area, Koiviston Huvila is one of Espoo's most atmospheric venues. The restored villa, its lakeside saunas, and the forest surroundings create a setting that is distinctly Finnish - peaceful, natural, and genuinely beautiful. It is particularly stunning in autumn and winter.

Finnish Nature Centre, Nuuksio National Park

For couples who truly want to be immersed in Finnish nature, the Finnish Nature Centre at Nuuksio National Park is an extraordinary choice. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the lake and forest, and the venue can accommodate up to 180 guests. The landscape is extraordinary in every season and provides a backdrop that is unlike anywhere else in the world.

Haikaranpesä Restaurant

For something entirely different, Restaurant Haikaranpesä is located in a former water tower in Espoo and offers a genuinely unique setting with panoramic views across the city and out towards the coast. On a clear day you can see all the way to Tallinn. It is a striking and memorable venue for couples who want something with a contemporary urban edge.

The Best Outdoor Locations for Wedding Portraits in Espoo

Even if you are celebrating at a venue, most couples want some time outside for couple portraits. Espoo is full of wonderful outdoor locations. A few of my favourites:

Nuuksio National Park - the forests, lakes, and rocky outcrops of Nuuksio are spectacular in every season and only 30 minutes from central Espoo. For natural, dramatic outdoor portraits there are few places in Finland that can match it.

Espoo Waterfront and Suvisaaristo - the southern coastline of Espoo offers beautiful sea views, rocky shoreline, and a coastal landscape that is particularly stunning in summer and early autumn.

Tapiola Park and Gardens - a more urban option, the parks and green spaces of Tapiola are beautifully maintained and offer a variety of backdrops from manicured gardens to open lawns and tree-lined paths.

The grounds of Espoonkartano - even if you are not celebrating here, the manor grounds are among the most photogenic outdoor spaces in the entire Helsinki region.

Planning Your Espoo Wedding - Practical Tips

Book early. Popular venues and photographers get booked up quickly, especially for June and July dates. If you have a venue in mind, start enquiring 12 to 18 months in advance.

Think about light. The timing of your ceremony and portraits affects the photographs significantly. If you are getting married in summer, late afternoon and early evening shoots take advantage of the incredible Finnish golden hour. In winter, a late morning shoot makes the most of the available daylight.

Embrace the seasons. Some of the most beautiful Espoo weddings I have photographed have been in October and February - seasons that couples initially worried about. The Finnish landscape is magnificent all year round.

Consider the whole day. Espoo's compact geography means you can combine a church ceremony in one part of the city, outdoor portraits in a park or forest, and a reception venue all within a short drive. The variety of locations available within a small area is one of Espoo's great strengths as a wedding destination.

Getting Married in Espoo as an International Couple

Espoo has a large and growing international community, and the city is increasingly popular with destination couples and expats planning their weddings in Finland. If English is your preferred language, finding suppliers you can communicate with easily is an important consideration.

As a British photographer based in Espoo, I work in English as my first language and have Finnish language skills for when they are needed. For international couples, that can make a real difference to how relaxed and confident you feel throughout the whole process - from the first conversation right through to the day itself.
